contextual research

Artist - Elbow-Toe

Elbow-Toe is a street graffiti artist but also works on large canvases. I've chose to use as an artist research as I've recently seen his work in a private gallery in my home town.

His work consist of tiny small pieces of cut out paper and different tones and colours that look like stunning acrylic painting from further away but if you go up and personal you will realise that your eyes deceived you as the art work is formed by thousands of tiny minute pieces of paper and some larger which he builds up slowly layer by layer.

this image here is a piece of his work that from far away looks like a painting when in actual fact its a collage of loads of different tiny pieces of coloured paper.

His work has a 3 dimensional look when viewed from certain angles which gives it more depth. His work is seen as graffiti by some viewers and he works on walls on a large scale. For his wall works of art he has to start off by painting and stencilling in layers which leads on to his collage affect that he creates on canvases. He created them over night to start off with at the start of his career to become better known. He had to work fast when he placed them in areas he shouldn't have.

The intentions behind his work are to show that even graffiti can be a form of art.  His work is not really seen as vandalism and is seen as an art form. Because of how Elbow-Toes work is created it is more of an art form than vandalism because people like to view his work and see all the detail that he puts into his work. By starting off painting and stencilling on walls he become noticed and because of his graffiti, which people like, it made him successful and then he started presenting his work in galleries. If he did not start by creating his graffiti he would not have been noticed and would not have been a successful graffiti artist

Artist - Teresita Fernandez

An artist that stood out to me is Teresita Fernández work, In particular her large graphite and Indian ink drawings on wood. From viewing her work it looks like her theme is mining and using man made and unman made materials to reflect that. “Inspired by the landscape and natural phenomena as well as diverse historical and cultural references” so her work is very much based on her surroundings during the present time.

In this next drawing it appears to look as if there are tiny pieces of graphite chunks placed on a wall when in fact shes hand drawn the rocky illusion using small soft graphite strokes and it also looks like a meteor shower “At the centre of the exhibition is a striking and encompassing installation composed entirely of graphite”. The inspiration for her drawings come from an area she has visited and studied called ‘Yellow Mountains “Yellow Mountains is an inverted topographical sculpture that refers to Huangshan, the mountain range that has inspired countless poems and paintings throughout Chinese history”
Artist - Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a portrait painter who paints portraits of fictional characters in strange non related environments. Her painting have a theme of brown rough brush painted brush strokes with people in the centre of the slightly light brown highlighted areas which appear to look rushed she says "I tend to complete a painting in a day," which explains why they appear rushedShe paints the people in her paintings in certain poses and with certain expressions and is usually alone or accompanied by other fictional characters.

What the 2 fellers in the painting are doing is not known so easily as it doesn’t have a certain direction as to what they’re doing (maybe exercise or some kind of sport). “Are the two figures Milk for a Maestro (2012) involved in exercise, or is the hand gestures of the man in the white shirt that of a ‘maestro’ conducting a classical orchestra?” With there being no distinct indication of what they are doing it leaves a mystery to this painting and the viewer can be the judge of what they think they perceive.
